Emily Heird, LPC/MHSP

Emily founded Knoxville Counseling Services, PLLC in 2015 and serves as President and CEO.  She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Collaborative Divorce Coach, and Rule 31 Mediator. She received her Bachelor of Science from the College of William & Mary, and her Master of Education in Counseling and Counselor Education from Indiana University.  Emily has been providing counseling services to individuals and families in Knoxville since 2011. Prior to opening the private practice, she worked with children in foster care, helping them heal from trauma and neglect. She was certified in TF-CBT and Child-Parent Psychotherapy. She also worked with parents who were working to be reunified with their children, helping them heal from their own traumas and mental health issues that were impacting their ability to positively parent. Emily became the Regional Director of the Knox area and supervised a large staff of therapists and case managers. In 2015, Emily decided to transition to private practice in order to get back to working with clients, do more counseling, and less administrative work. She also wanted to expand on the services she could offer, including Collaborative Divorce.

Emily has recently relocated to the Nashville area and still remains owner of Knoxville Counseling Services. Emily is offering video-based services through our Telehealth platform, TheraNest, to clients in Knoxville who want to work with her due to her specialties or because clients have specifically been referred to her.

Due to the nature of telehealth, the services offered will be focused on adult individual therapy.  Emily has a wide variety of topical interests when it comes to working with clients. Some areas include anxiety, grief, self-esteem/self-confidence/self-worth, relationship issues, perfectionism, trauma, pregnancy and post-pregnancy, adjustment to motherhood, boundaries, career issues (increase performance, navigating difficult work relationships, work/life balance), etc. She enjoys the variety of issues and challenges as it keeps sessions different throughout the day. Emily also has research experience and graduate courses in sports psychology and enjoys applying the principles of sports psychology to our everyday lives. She focuses on working with adults 25 and older and most of her clients are working professionals (e.g., attorneys, college professors, teachers, doctors, executive business professionals, physical therapists, financial advisors, etc.). Emily takes an integrative strengths-based approach to counseling, incorporating techniques from many approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), positive psychology, mindfulness, and solution-focused. She collaborates with you to find what approach best fit your needs.

Emily has extensive experience in working with divorcing couples. She is a Collaborative Divorce Coach and Rule 31 Mediator and while in Knoxville, she served as founding member of the East Tennessee Collaborative Association, Vice-President from 2016-2018 and was President in 2019 until relocation. While Emily cannot perform mediation services or collaborative divorce coaching via video conferencing, she can still do Divorce Options Consultations: When people decide they want to pursue a divorce, they are often times not sure what is next. They don't know where to start or who is a trusted attorney. Many are unaware that there are many process options for how to get divorced in TN and deciding on the right option for you and your family can have a positive emotional and financial impact. During a Divorce Options Consultation, Emily will listen to your circumstances and make recommendations for the most appropriate process and refer you to trusted colleagues in Knoxville. Emily can also provide individual Divorce Coaching and/or counseling through video conference.

She has previously been an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at King University and has guest lectured at the University of Tennessee.
